Mooring Systems

Mooring Blocks

  • Our mooring blocks are constructed according to engineer designed drawings. Their unique design nearly doubles the service life of the mooring compared to other single pin blocks. The are also designed to prevent chain entanglement. (photo – ‘Mooring Blocks‘)

    7 – 12 meters (23’ to 40’)
8 tonne mooring systems are engineered to suit larger vessels or vessel owners who want mooring to ride out cyclones or extreme weather events.

Bottom ‘stud link chain’

  • The purpose of bottom chain is to connect the mooring block to the top chain and to work as the main energy absorbing component of a mooring, particularly in heavy weather. For the bottom chain to work effectively and efficiently it must have a critical amount of weight. Given this we use the most effective and durable sizes. The average size of our stud link chain is 35mm-38mm. (approximately 25kg per metre). (photo – Good quality stud link chain)

Top chain

  • As per our standards, MN only uses ‘proof coil tested chain’. Using this chain ensures its integrity, quality and strength. Other chain, particularly out of china or India are of questionable integrity and known wear at an accelerated or erratic rate thus exposing the mooring to failure. (photo – ‘Poor quality chain‘)

Head Ropes or Strop

  • Moorings Northland only uses the best quality ‘tested’ ropes. Our ropes are on thousands of mooring systems and have proven the test of time. We independently test break or ropes to destruction and they all brake above the tested ratings on supplier reports.

Swivels and Shackles

  • Our company standards ensure we fit the best recognized industry standard swivels. All our shackles are batch ‘tested to destruction’. We fit larger shackles to moorings affected with electrolysis and ensure that the pin of the shackle is larger in diameter than the top chain it attached to. We also weld the shackle pins closed to prevent any potential for slippage if the pin thread wears. (photo right – ‘Destroyed shackle‘) This shackle was tested to destruction.

Mooring Float Support Systems

Mooring Northland offers three ‘float support systems” in addition to regular foam filled standard buoys:-

  • The ‘tall stand Fergie Buoy’ system
  • The ‘Easy moor float system’

A mooring float system is designed to support all the top chain thus making the strop and head rope very light and easy to secure your vessel to.  We can do short pole or long pole designs.

Tall stand “Fergie Buoy” float system

The ‘tall stand Fergie Buoy’ is a hard rotationally molded float that stands approximately 1.5meters above the water. It is connected to the top chain via a nylon center strop. The head rope or bridle is then attached to this center strop.

The Pros and Cons

  • Its easy to use
  • Has high positive buoyancy
  • Is highly visible
  • Supports the head rope or bridle above the water
  • Has a proven track record as a mooring support system
  • Causes the head rope or bridle to twist up or un-lay if no top swivel is fitted (NRC now require stainless steel swivel be fitted (Aug 13))
  • Increases electrolysis to the top chain
  • Takes longer to service than a standard mooring

Easy moor float system

  • This a soft inflatable buoy with a raised center pole/head rope support system. It supports and is connected to the top chain via a 20 tonne breaking strain center rope. A head rope or bridle is then connected to the center rope via a stainless steel swivel. (photo – ‘Easy moor float system‘)

The Pros and Cons

  • This system is strong yet gentle on the top sides.
  • It is easy to use
  • Has high positive buoyancy
  • Is highly visible Supports the head rope or bridle above the water
  • Has a proven track record as a mooring support system
  • Increases electrolysis to the top chain
  • Takes longer to service than a standard mooring
  • Has a moderate tendency to twist the head rope or bridle (NRC now requires a stainless steel swivel to be attached (Aug 13)).

Summary

FLOATS
Mooring type
Suitable for any mooring type
Standard buoy
A standard foam filled mooring buoy(orange, yellow or glow in the dark) attached to the head rope by a buoy line which is designed to hold your mooring head rope on the surface.
Ezy moor float system
This is a tough yet soft, long life, large orange inflatable buoy with elevated centre pole designed for easy mooring and to reduce head rope slime.
Tall stand up float system
This is a tall, tough and durable hard plastic float support system designed for easy mooring and to reduce head rope slime.
